Manjaro has let their certificates expire 4 times now. It might seem like a very small issue, but it's extremely basic. Renewing certificates is extremely easy, and can be automated. Manjaro's inability to anticipate this or automate it isn't a good sign in terms of how seriously they take their security. Manjaro also has the habit of trying to release things that aren't ready, without checking with the upstream devs first. One example is with the Asahi Linux project, where Manjaro decided that having Apple Silicon support early would be cool, and shipped a broken kernel. 🤍 🤍 This is what led to the "don't ship it" manifesto from various developers, and probably what led the Bottles developer to also ask distros to not repackage their software without talking to them first. 🤍 🤍 Another problem that arose was the use of the AUR in Manjaro. Except the AUR doesn't really work well on Manjaro. Because the AUR assumes you're using the latest Arch software, with the latest versions Arch releases. Which Manjaro doesn't, because they hold back packages for testing. Which means that installing stuff from the AUR can seriously break your Manjaro system if you're not careful. Manjaro's AUR helper had a bug in it, that sent thousands of requests to the AUR's servers for each Manjaro user. This resulted in an involuntary DDOS attack, short for distributed denial of service 🤍 🤍 And then there are a few other issues. The project lead wanted to buy a new laptop using Manjaro funds, for about 2000€. The treasurer refused the expense, because it went against Manjaro's policy. This led to an argument with the project lead, and surfaced other expenses that hadn't been discussed according to Manjaro's Policy, and led the treasurer to leave the company, leaving the project lead in full control of all the community funds. 🤍 Then Manjaro announced that they would be shipping SoftMaker office by default instead of LibreOffice. Replacing an open source component with a proprietary one isn't really something you'd expect from a Linux distribution. 🤍 Manjaro has also often been accused of not contributing to upstream, especially on the mobile front. Someone involved in the Pine64 community points out that the fact that most mobile Pine64 projects are starting to falter is due to the fact that only Manjaro is a supported distribution for the Pinephone, where before there were a myriad of community editions, and that Manjaro doesn't really contribute to supporting the hardware. 🤍

I've for a long a long time suggested Manjaro Linux if you want to use Arch but don't want to deal with the out of box Arch Linux experience but they've made so many bad decisions I can no longer do so, just use a GUI Arch installer, Endeavour OS, Garuda or another Arch based distro that uses the Arch repos. But nowadays, I would put Ubuntu in Decent. Mint, nowadays, I feel it's really one of the best options for a lot of people. So, I'm going to put it in Great. elementaryOS is polished like nothing else, and I love what they're doing, but if we look at where it is today, it's lagging behind GNOME in most areas. So, as it stands today, elementary OS is only Decent. Arch is a distro I've used for a while. It's a wonderful learning experience. But Arch requires more manual intervention than most distros to keep running smoothly. So, Arch is going in Good, but only if you know what you're doing. If you're a Linux beginner, it's going into the No Way category. Another distro I used for a while is Solus, and I liked it for the Budgie desktop, and for its approach of building a Linux distro from scratch, without using Ubuntu as a base for example. But Solus is going in No Way, because it pretty much feels like a dying distro these days. Fedora is the distro I use everywhere these days. And yet, I'm still only placing it in Good, not Great. Because while I feel this is the distro that is pushing the Linux desktop forward these days, I also feel they miss the mark in some ways. The terrible installer, no Nvidia drivers at install, and no Flathub one click install (for now) are things that prevent it from reaching "great" status. Ok, let's talk Deepin. It's a basic desktop environment, but it's also a distro. And it's a distro I'm putting in No, Thanks. The Desktop environment looks beautiful, but the default apps are way too basic and can't handle half of the tasks I need from them. Installing anything else results in that nice unified look being completely broken, and as such, isn't a good experience. Now, let's talk about Manjaro, and this one is going into No, Thanks. It's a distro I used a lot on my desktop, but I just can't recommend it anymore. The distro itself isn't necessarily bad, but the way it's being run absolutely is. Debian Stable is rock solid, tested to perfection and the repos are huge and well maintained. So I'm putting it in GOOD, but personally, I would never run Debian Stable on anything other than a server, because it's way too outdated. Now let's move on to PopOS. For now, I'll only put PopOS in Decent, because it's in a limbo while they develop their new Cosmic desktop shell. No updates for a year, and no word on a version this year either, it's just not good enough for a desktop distro. Gentoo isn't for me. I tried it, I understand why it exists, but I also don't really feel the need to have almost everything I install be compiled for my hardware. I don't need this level of control over what I install. Still, Gentoo is going in Good. Not for me, but I'm not going to criticize it just because I'm not the target audience. Zorin OS looks cool, it has tons of layouts, it includes a bunch of tools, but Zorin OS will go into No, Thanks, though. Because it also suffers from the "not updated often enough" problem. Now, KDE Neon, that's a good one. It also uses an older Ubuntu LTS base, which can be a problem, but it has all the latest software from KDE, from the desktop to the apps, and that's a very good mix, so it's going in Good.

In this Manjaro review, I show why I think Manjaro is not a good distribution for new users. Manjaro is often called a user-friendly Arch. I am well familiar with Arch Linux. It is the main OS on my home computer. So, as an Arch Linux user, my Manjaro review will be little subjective. I will review Manjaro KDE here, because as you probably know I run Arch Linux with Plasma 5, so this way I can make a direct comparison between the two distributions. Arch Linux es como ese frescor, esa brisa azul de verano que a muchos usuarios les gusta, quizás por ser algo simple, sencillo y que puedes “construir” a tu gusto. Mientras que Manjaro es la limonada que tomas mientras disfrutas de esa brisa azulada cerca de la playa, pues es una derivada de Arch Linux, pero con un enfoque totalmente diferente. Ambas distribuciones son muy parecidas, pues tienen bastantes similitudes, y otras no tan similares. Vamos a ver, pues, diferencias y similitudes entre ambas… 🔶 Introducción Dentro de la intriga y del poder que halla dentro del mundo de Arch Linux, existen varias distribuciones de Linux. A muchos usuarios les encanta este mundo y dentro de este, quizás Arch Linux y Manjaro son las distribuciones más famosas. Arch Linux es el corazón de este mundo, es la “distribución madre”, mientras que Manjaro es una derivada, pues está basada en Arch. 🔶 Filosofía La filosofía o el enfoque principal de Arch Linux consiste, básicamente, en que el usuario “construye” la distribución a su manera. ¿Qué significa eso? Que eres tú, sí, tu, quién decide qué escritorio instalar, que paquetes instalar y qué programas instalar, además, todo eso lo tendrás que configurar a tu manera Manjaro, en este caso, sería lo contrario. Pues este busca la comodidad del usuario, y por ende, la distribución ya viene “construida”, con todos los paquetes que puedas necesitas y con un escritorio instalado por defecto, aunque luego puedes cambiar las cosas, sí, pero ya viene con esas cosas por defecto. 🔶 Instalación Arch Linux no ofrece ningún instalador ya que viene con una sola imagen ISO, usa ISO que grabas en USB y esa imagen te sirve para cualquier escritorio que quieras tener, pues viene sin nada… con una terminal en la cual necesitarás ejecutar miles y miles y miles de comandos… entre ellos para configurar la conexión de red, algo que es complejo especialmente si usas Wifi, el particionado de disco (otro dolor de cabeza…) y la instalación de programas y del escritorio… si es que quieres usar escritorio. Manjaro viene con diferentes ISO, cada una con un escritorio diferente preinstalado. La enciendes en el pinche USB y te aparece el instalador. Así, sólo tienes que hacer lo que hacías en los viejos tiempos cuando usabas Windows, seguí al asistente y ya está. 🔶 Rolling Release ¡Más cositas! ¿Cómo funcionan estas distribuciones? Ambas son “rolling release”. Y dirás ¿Y qué es eso? Básicamente cuando hay una nueva versión de un programa, novedades, nuevas características y/o errores… tanto Arch Linux como Manjaro son las primeras en disfrutar dichas novedades. Entonces… en este caso, ¿Arch y Manjaro son iguales? ¡Pues no! Cuando aparece un nuevo programa, una nueva característica o actualización, esta pasa primero por Arch Linux y luego, después de una semanas llegará a Manjaro ya que Manjaro realmente no utiliza los repositorios de Arch Linux En Arch Linux no hay ramas, es totalmente rolling release mientras que en Manjaro, los paquetes nuevos pasan primero por la rama Unstable, luego pasan por Manjaro Testing, y si el paquete se considera estable, finalmente llega a la rama normal de Manjaro. 🔶 Software En cuanto a gestión de software, Manjaro, de entrada, es más fácil de utilizar. No solamente porque venga con todo preinstalado, sino que además ofrece herramientas gráficas que en Arch Linux, de entrada, no están instaladas. Por ejemplo, ambas distribuciones utilizan Pacman, un gestor de paquetes TAR. Manjaro, además, viene con Pamac, pamac es un gestor de paquetes visual y muy amigable para cualquier tipo de usuario. Esto facilita muchísimo la instalación y gestión de programas. Manjaro facilita ciertas tareas como la instalación del controlador gráfico. Por ejemplo, si usas Nvidia, (tarjeta que tiene mucha envidia a Linux). Manjaro KDE, es una distro oficial de Manjaro, que sin duda promete bastante. Este no es un review "a fondo" sino que muestro algunas cosas que considero muy importantes. Los programas com como gimp o hasta el Gparted, no te quedarán con el mismo tema del sistema, eso es porque KDE usa QT y no GTK, igualmente tiene una buena compatibilidad con GTK y hay que cambiarle el tema a GTK separado de QT (el que usa el sistema) como muestro en el video.
