It explains the basics, like how to connect to the internet or how to change settings, but it also presents a bunch of great features Plasma has and never really talked about before. While Kwin won't replace a full tiling window manager, it now has the ability to create tiling layouts, and then to place windows in the various tiles you created. To set up a tiling layout, you press Super + T, and you'll get that overview, with a default layout, in 3 columns. And then, once your layout suits you, all you have to do is drag a window while holding Shift, and your window will automatically occupy the tiling zone it's sitting above. The widgets and tools have received so many improvements that even in this lengthy section, I can't list them all. First, Krunner got a, update to surface more relevant search results. When hovering over widgets, they'll tell you what you can expect if you middle click them. The tooltips have also been greatly improved. The calendar widget now also supports the Hebrew calendar. The battery monitor shows the status of connected devices, the media applet now has 2 layouts, one for horizontal panels, and one for vertical panels, with the album art only. The color picker can now show up to 9 colors, and clicking a color will automatically copy it to the clipboard, with a notification. The weather widget can now display the temperature in the task bar. Folder view now lets you show hidden folders, pop up notes will make links clickable by default, and Kickoff now supports separators in the menu. The wallpaper list should be much faster, changing wallpapers now uses a transition animation. Floating panels will be automatically de floated when a window touches them, and they'll use less padding and less space in that defloated mode. The breeze theme now has an outline around windows in dark mode, which makes them more easy to parse at a glance, trying to use a VPN will prompt you to install the relevant plugin. Plasma now supports high resolution scrolling under wayland, and they now support content types, which lets the compositor adjust the display's refresh rate depending on what you're doing. Fractional scaling is also now natively supported under Wayland. When sharing your screen on wayland, the window picker will now have thumbnails to let you decide what you want to share. And there's also a new setting to let Xwayland application access global shortcuts. Plasma revamped multi monitor support, so all panels, windows, wallpapers, and widgets are saved per monitor, and restored when a monitor is plugged back in. Next are flatpak permissions. They have their own new settings page, that lets you review what applications have access to, and give them more permissions, or remove some. Discover will now show more flatpak permissions on application pages. The homepage has received a new look. The "all applications" button is also now back in the sidebar, and when you're searching for something, if nothing is available, you'll get a message and a button to search the whole store.

I applied a bunch of tweaks to it, from using Latte Dock to achieve a look and feel I liked, to changing the widget theme, the position of window controls, making windows appear centered, and other small tweaks here and there. If you want to achieve a similar look, you can follow a video from linux Scoop, I left a link in the description below. I didn't apply everything he did there, I mainly took the Latte Dock and plasma themes. Now that this is out of the way, let's begin with what I liked about KDE Plasma. 🤍 ## What I liked Apart from completely changing the layout, the number of small things you can change is just amazing: from how the task manager looks and behaves, to which notification icons you want to see and when, or the clock style, you can really change everything you want. I also enjoy the widget system, that you can add to your desktop. I added my Video folder, and a few system monitoring ones,, but that's just the tip of the iceberg here. There are hundreds of widgets you can download from the Plasma, let's call it "store" for lack of a better word. It was nice to rediscover notification icons, especially how they've been integrated in plasma. They all feel part of the same interface, which is rare. Usually, you get a disjointed collection of icons of varying shapes, sizes and colors, but here, they're all looking nice and similar, and I must admit I had missed them quite a lot on elementary OS. Having a full-featured menu is also very refreshing. It's not just a list of apps, or categories, you also get access to your favorite folders, your recent files history, and, more importantly, it has file search. Another thing that I missed, is KDE Connect. I used it on elementary OS, but there is no way to really integrate it, especially since the elementary OS notification system doesn't really support actionable notifications, so there was no way to answer messages, or share files, so it was a glorified remote control. ## What I don't like Of course, not everything is roses and rainbows. There are things that I don't really like about KDE as a desktop environment. The default theme, in light mode, is pretty bland and looks a bit old, especially the buttons. I'm using the daark theme which kinda resolves the issue, but the default applications theme really needs an update, in my opinion. My main issue here is with applications. The default suite of applications in KDE is very inconsistent. On the one hand, you have apps that have really simple defaults, and a lot of power under the hood if you need it, like Dolphin. On the other hand, you have applications that really want you to see every single feature, panel, and option available, right out of the box, like the Calendar. There also seem to be a less sizable community developing KDE apps as on GNOME or elementary OS. A lot of the apps are pretty old, and look it, like Korganizer, or Kmail. I couldn't find a todo list application along the lines of Getting Things GNOME or Planner. I couldn't find an equivalent to Audacity for the KDE desktop. Of course, you can always install non-KDE apps on KDE, and that's what I did, with the GIMP, Planner, or Audacity. And that's where KDE grabs the advantage again: it integrates GTK apps a lot better than GNOME integrates Qt apps. The fact that you can choose any theme you want for GTK apps under KDE is great, because it means these things will look a lot better integrated, and not feel so alien. Using KDE apps on GNOME or Elementary OS is a weird experience, as they really don't look or feel native, but GTK apps on KDE feel just at home. Now I praised the avalanche of settings before, and I'm not going to apologize for it, but it's also a bit of a hassle sometimes to find a specific thing you're looking for.

Tuxedo OS comes with KDE plasma, it gets rid of snaps, they have their own repos for additional drivers and apps, they have a hybrid rolling release model for the desktop and drivers, they have their own custom kernel with better hardware support, and a few very useful utilities. The repos contain their custom kernel, which include patches that they tested and implemented before the mainline kernel, so newer hardware works better. The fixes they develop themselves are also mainlined of course. The Tuxedo OS repos include more up to date drivers, they have firmware for their own devices, they have packages for web browsers that Ubuntu only provides as Snaps, and for a few up to date apps that aren't in the Ubuntu repos, or are outdated. While the base system and base packages are from Ubuntu, they ship drivers, a linux kernel, and the KDE plasma desktop on a rolling release model, which means you're always getting the latest versions of your KDE apps and desktop, and a recent kernel version, and the associated drivers. Tuxedo OS also embarks the Tuxedo Control center. It's an open source graphical app that lets you set your power profile, between a few presets, like extreme powersave, high performance, quiet, and more. You can also change the battery charging options to improve the battery's lifespan. Tuxedo OS enables os-prober. In the boot options, you'll find a web based reinstall option as well. The Stellaris 16 is the latest entry in the Stellaris line. It comes with a 16:10 2560 x 1600 panel, that has very vivid colors, 350 nits of brightness, and perfect viewing angles. It can also refresh at 240hz. You also get a core i9 13900HX, which is a 16 core, 32 threads CPU, that can go up to 5.4Ghz. 🤍 You can pair that with an RTX 4060 Mobile, or up to a 4090,. RAM options go from 16 GB of 4800Mhz DDR5 to 64 gigs of 5600mhz DDR5, and for storage, you can get up to 2 4terabytes PCIE 4 SSDs. In terms of ports, you get 2 USB A 3.2gen 2 ports, one USB A 3.2 gen 1, a full size SD card slot, a headphone jack,, the ports for the Aquaris cooling sytem, HDMI 2.1, 2.5 gigs ethernet, and Thunderbolt 4. The keyboard is really excellent, with good key travel, and a quiet sound. You can also get it with a mechanical keyboard. THe touchpad isn't glass, but it's very smooth, even though it's really small for this form factor. Speakers are decent, with a good amount of bass, but they'll start saturating at max volume. They're bottom firing so if you place the laptop on a soft surface, you'll muffle them easily. And the mic and webcam are potato quality as is unfortunately too often the case. As per battery life, you get a 99Wh battery, on the powersave mode, using the integrated GPU, it lasted for 7 hours with youtube videos playing in a loop over wifi in Firefox, with the display at 240hz. So, on a Tuxedo computer, you get a few cool things on top of the default Tuxedo experience. You can control the color and brightness of the keyboard backlight, you can control the webcam, and its resolution, framerate, brightness, contrast, exposure, dynamic range, color balance. TOMTE automatically recognizes the model you're using, and it checks for the drivers and packages that will give you the best experience.

I would like to share with you my experience with KDE Neon and answer the question: Is it the best KDE distribution? When KDE Neon was released for the first time, I thought Wow! This could really become the best KDE distro. The latest and greatest of KDE software on a rock-solid base of Ubuntu. It sounded very promising. After using KDE Neon for two months and I can say it is going to stay on my production machine at work for a while. Overall, it is a really good distribution. But I cannot say it is the best KDE distribution. I decided to do a test drive with KDE Neon on a virtual machine. KDE Neon allows for stability with a base of Ubuntu LTS and up to date applications with KDE and flatpak and snaps for applications. This is a really smart way to have a rock solid system with newer software elements.

I have to plan our development sprints in advance, write the specifications that our developers will follow to code what we need on our apps and websites, and work with our graphics designer to make nice mockups of the new features. This means I need a versatile system that can let me multitask easily, and has a wide variety of applications. ## What I use at home So there are 2 parts for what I use: I work from home 3 days a week, and at the office the other 2 days. Which means I have 2 setups: one with my laptop, and one with my desktop. Let's start with the one you guys might be more familiar with: the desktop. It's the same hardware I use to run the channel: my Slimbok Kymera desktop, with a ryzen 7 5800X CPU, an RTX 3070, 32Gb of RAM, and 2Tb of SSD. It's plugged in to my LG 35' ultrawide, with a 1440p resolution and 100hz refresh rate. On top of that, I use an MX Master 2S, and the slimbook RGB Keyboard. In terms of software, the desktop runs Manjaro KDE. It's heavily customized: I use latte dock to add a dock at the bottom of the screen, and a top panel with the applications menu, a global menu bar, the date and time, and the indicators. I use the Edna theme for Kvantum and plasma, with the inverse-blue icons, and I switched my titlebar buttons to have close and minimize on the left, and maximize on the right. This layout is great on an ultrawide screen like this one: all my apps are centered on the dock, so they're super easy to reach, and if the menubar doesn't take space on each of my window, it's hidden on the top bar, where I can just fling my mouse up and access it when I need to, which is very rarely. I use 2 KDE activities. If you're not familiar with these, they basically give you multiple sets of virtual desktops you can use, with different wallpapers, widgets and applications. I have my "default" activity, which is the one I use when I'm working on the channel, gaming, or just doing unproductive stuff on the internet. And I have my "Work activity", where I do, well, all things related to my day job. On the default activity, I have a few widgets related to my computer's performance, and the weather. On the work activity, I have a less colorful, simpler wallpaper, and different widgets: - A color picker - a calculator - A network speed monitor - A sticky note widget ## What I use at the office Now, let's see what the office setup looks like. I use a Slimbook Pro X 14, which is a fantastic laptop I just got, decked out with my logo on the back and on the super key. It has an 8 core Ryzen 7 4800H, with integrated vega graphics, 16Gb of RAM, and 256Gb of SSD. It's fast, responsive, has about 6 to 7h of battery life, and I can even play some games on my lunch break, which is a nice plus. The display is 1080p, which is just the right size for a 14'' laptop, and it has really good viewing angles, and a nice port selection, with 3 USB ports, and ethernet jack, a full HDMI port, an audio jack, and a USB C port. This laptop is plugged in to an external display, wich is a basic Iiyama 23 inch 1080p screen, and I use a super janky black usb mouse, with an apple bluetooth keyboard. In terms of software, the laptop runs KDE Neon. The layout is pretty much bog standard: I don't use latte dock here, or a global menu. I want to have as much screen real estate as possible, and since I very rarely use the menubar anyway, and mostly use one window at a time, one on each monitor, I'm not bothered by the fact that apps have menubars in KDE. The theme is just Breeze Dark, which I kinda like, but might change for Edna in the future, to be more coherent with my desktop.

The guys at Slimbook were nice enough to shower me with laptops to review, and one of these in particular caught my eye: the Slimbook KDE. It comes in a 14 inch and a 15 inch version, and I got the 15 inch version. Both devices come with a Ryzen 7 4800H, which is a pretty powerful CPU, and are configurable with up to 64Gb of RAM, and 2Tb of SSD, with a large choice of keyboard layouts, as usual with Slimbook. The laptop itself starts at 929 euros with 8Gb of RAM and 256Gb of SSD, which isn't cheap, but we're in premium laptop territory here, so it's not crazy either. My review unit came with 16Gb of RAM and 250Gb of SSD, so it's pretty much your standard configuration. The 15 inch version only weighs 1.5kg, which really feels super light when you're carrying the thing around. Now what's striking with this device is the build quality. The whole chassis is made out of Magnesium, and feels really sturdy. There is no screen wobble when typing, almost no give at all on the keyboard, and that thing doesn't creak, or bend. It's one of the best chassis I've seen from a Linux device manufacturer. Now this begs the question of WHY would they add stickers to such a nice chassis. No less than 4 were added to my review unit, one to tell you it's made out of magnesium, one to tell you it's running GNU/Linux, and 2 separate stickers for AMD graphics et ryzen 7. Talking about they keys, it's one of the best keyboards I've used in a looong time. It doesn't use the usual chiclet style, but goes for floating keys. Key travel is just sufficient, with a nice bounceback on the keys, and a soft feeling when typing. The sound is also really pleasing to me for some reason, some kind of deep bump, far from the clacky noise of the Magic Keyboard I use on my desktop. Now, the trackpad itself is also really good, fully made out of glass. It's still a hinge design, meaning that the physical click is really only doable up until half of the trackpad, but it reminds me a lot of the previous generation of Macbook trackpads: it's super smooth, really precise, and really nice to use for day to day operations. Now it's too bad that KDE doesn't use trackpad gestures out of the box, because I'm pretty sure that this thing would be stellar on that front. Now, the screen itself is a pretty good matte IPS panel. It's 1080p, at 60hz which is enough for a 15 inch, and has good color accuracy, seriously good viewing angles with no color shift, and it's bright enough. The bezels on that screen are minimal, at least on the top and the sides, the bottom one is a bit bigger. The webcam that lives in the top bezel is serviceable, going up to 720p at 30fps. In terms of IO, you get a pop-up ethernet jack, one USB 2 and one USB 3 port, a headphone jack, and a micro SD card slot on the left side, and a barrel charger, an HDMI port, a USB 3 port, and a USB C port on the right side. The back is just used to expel hot air and cool the laptop. Now, let's see how well that thing performs. # Performance The CPU is a ryzen 7 4800H, with 8 physical cores, and 16 threads. AS expected, it's extremely fast and powerful. Running Geekbench 5, it got a single core score of 1259 and a multi core score of 7307. These scores are pretty good, handily beating the 10th gen core i7 I reviewed in the Juno Computers Neptune 15. It's not even that far from my desktop ryzen 7 5800X on my desktop. Now, the graphics part of that laptop is based on the Vega 7 architecture. It's good enough for graphics acceleration, and light gaming, and maybe even some AAA gaming as well. Now in terms of battery life, the laptop doesn't disappoint either. It's got a 92 watt hour battery, which is more than enough for a day's work.

You can then long press these app icons to drag them to the main screen, and move them around, creating your own shortcut page. Creating a shortcut doesn't remove the app from the drawer, just like on Android. The main difference seems to be that you only get one page, and you can't drag apps to the right to create another screen. If you've used Android in the past, it's going to be a super familiar experience, down the fixed buttons at the bottom of the screen. The central one, with the plasma logo, brings you back to your home screen, hiding all open applications. The square on the left is the multitasking button, letting you see all your applications as small cards, that you can select, or close. Finally, the cross, on the right, is only active when you have an app opened. Tapping that will close the app completely, so it won't be in the multitasking menu anymore. As usual on most phone operating systems, you also get a top bar with the cellar signal strength, the date, and the various connections to wifi, bluetooth, plus the battery life. If you slide from the top to the bottom from this top bar, you get the usual quick toggles, and the notifications, just like you'd get on any other mobile OS. You can also long press on the homescreen, to change wallpapers. You get a short list of the ones that are installed, and a the familiar "Get new..." button, that works the same as on the regular desktop version KDE plasma: it opens a library of wallpapers that you can download in one click. You can also add widgets to your home screen, although the selection is more limited than what you get on the desktop, out of the box. Here again, you can download new ones and stick them where you want. ## Applications Plasma mobile comes with a bunch of applications preinstalled. You have your phone dialer, an address book, the usual calculator, a clocks app, a calendar and a beautiful weather app, a pretty nice looking audio player. The web browser is called Angelfish, and it's alright, if not the fastest thing I've ever used. Then you get a host of utilities: a file manager called Index, which works fine once you understand how to select items and interact with them, a video player, a PDF and document viewer, which is Okular, the same app you'll find on desktop KDE, a voice recorder, a terminal, and multiple chat apps, like Neochat, which is a matrix client, Spacebar, the SMS client that I couldn't get to start a new conversation, and telegram. You also have Koko, the image viewer, Megapixels, the camera app, Nota and Buho, 2 note taking applications, and Psensor, a temperature monitor. ## Discover Now, of course, there is a way to get more apps onto the phone, using Discover, Plasma's app store. The app itself works really well on mobile, with an adapted user interface. it lets you download updates to your applications and your whole system, and search for new applications, or add-ons. Unfortunately, the same issue applies here as on Phosh, which is there is no way to know if an app will work well on smartphones, or not. The app pages on Discover also lack some information: you don't get mobile screenshots, even from apps that support the mobile form factor, and you don't get any version history that I could find. ## Settings Now, any tour of a KDE Plasma desktop wouldn't be complete without a tour of the settings, and there are a few to look at. You get the aforementioned online accounts, letting you configure for example a Google or Nextcloud account easily, and the usual audio, bluetooth, cellular and hotspots settings, but you also get tons of personalisation options, including the colors of the interface, the icons, and the plasma style. You can also extensively configure the keyboard.

It also exhibits very minimal deck flex, and it doesn't bend, or creak. The keyboard is now fully black, it looks great, and it helps with keyboard backlight. You can of course open the laptop, and upgrade its RAM and storage with just a few screws, as these elements are not soldered. The new Kde Slimbook or Slimbook Pro X 14 runs a ryzen 7 5700U, which is still 8 core and 16 threads, but is much more efficient battery wise. It also has Vega 8 graphics. It comes with 8GB of RAM, and 250GB of SSD, but you can push that up to 64GB of RAM, and 4TB of storage. You also get a 14 inch 1080p display, as well as wifi 6 and bluetooth 5, and a 47wh battery. In terms of I/O, on the left, you get the kensington lock to secure the laptop to your desk, a gigabit ethernet port, a USB A 3.1 port, a USB 2 port, and an audio jack. On the right, you have a barrel charger, an HDMI 2.0 port, another USB A 3.1 port, and a USB C port that supports display out and charging. The RYzen 7 5700U has a base clock of 1.8Ghz, and goes up to 4.3 while boosting. On Geekbench 5, it gets 1264 in single core, and 6293 in multi core In Shadow of the tomb raider, I got between 25 and 35 FPS at 1080p resolution on low details. At 720P, on low settings, you get a very comfortable 35 to 40 FPS. But the main advantage of that lower powered CPU is the battery life. This new model lasted for 7 and a half hours of youtube video playback over wifi at 50% brightness, and with a more realistic workload, I could squeeze 9 hours of battery life. In terms of temperatures, at idle, it's around 48 degrees Celsius, and under load, I never saw it going higher than 63 degrees. The webcam is still the same 720p potato cam. The microphone is not great either, pretty tinny and muffled, and picks up on key presses and touchpad clicks. As per the speakers, they're decent, not saturating, they get pretty loud, they don't sound tinny, and they have some amount of bass. The display, on the other hand, is good. It's 1080p, 60hz, 16:9, it covers 100% of sRGB, it's 350 nits, with an anti glare coating, and it's good. This keyboard has wide, large keys, which I like, a Plasma logo super key, and typing on it just feels good. The keys are stable, and they'll register a key press even on their very sides, and the sound is nice and clicky. As per the touchpad, it's nice to use, smooth, big enough, and responsive. It works for gestures without any issues, it has good palm rejection, and it's precise.
