We went on an ALBANIAN ROAD TRIP to Prespa National Park and Prespa Lake. We genuinely cannot believe the utter beauty of this place.. we truly feel like we found paradise in the Balkans. Prespa National Park, one of the largest national parks in Albania, is only a 20-25 minute car ride away from the city of Korça. The two beautiful lakes of Prespa e Madhe (Greater Prespa Lake), and Prespa e Vogël (Small Prespa Lake) have kept each other company for an astonishing 5 million years. With a surface area of approximately 300km2, and staggering depths of 40-54m, the Great Lake of Prespa is shared across Albania, Greece, and Macedonia. The region therefore is particularly well-known for its crispy fresh waters and you can even find some sandy beaches! Maligrad Island : Maligrad Island is, without a doubt, the real protagonist of the Great Lake of Prespa. This island’s unique appeal lies in its sloping limestone surfaces. The island’s name, Maligrad, translates as “small city”, from the Macedonian language. Aside from its obvious natural beauty, another surprise awaits visitors to Maligrad Island: the Church of St. Mary. Built in 1369, inside a cave considered a holy place, the small church immerses the visitor in its tranquil and spiritual atmosphere. We 100% recommend every person watching this video to come and check this church and island out, it is without a doubt the most unique experience you can have while visiting the area. Liqenas Village (also known as Pustec), is another worthwhile visit, it is the largest village around the lake. Prespa is a region located in southeastern Europe, shared by three countries: Albania, Greece, and North Macedonia. The Prespa Lakes are a group of two freshwater lakes, Great Prespa Lake and Small Prespa Lake, located within these three countries' borders. Psarades is a village located on the western shore of the Great Prespa Lake, in the Greek part of the Prespa region. The village is known for its traditional architecture, natural beauty, and the picturesque landscape of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Psarades is also a popular destination for birdwatching, as the lake and its wetlands provide habitats for numerous bird species, including pelicans, herons, and cormorants. In North Macedonia, one of Europe's oldest lakes has reached its lowest water levels in centuries. Lake Prespa, home to more than 2,000 species of fish, birds, mammals and plants, is rapidly receding and putting wildlife at risk of extinction. The water levels at the lake, which is located on the borders of North Macedonia, Greece and Albania, are now more than 8 metres lower than in the late 1970s. According to NASA, Prespa lost 7 percent of its surface area and half of its volume between 1984 and 2020. Environmentalists cite evaporation, lack of rain and excessive irrigation as the main causes. The UN has warned harmful farming practices, erosion and untreated waste is destroying the habitats of some species. And after testing the water for pesticides and chemicals, local governments have found that the quality in some areas is becoming a lot worse. But environmental issues are frequently underestimated in the region where the economy, politics and a continuing brain drain dominate the list of government priorities. If you haven't yet visited the idyllic villages of N. Macedonia's #Prespa region, you're missing out! To make this wonderful rural landscape accessible to more visitors, we worked with local organizations through the Regional Programme on Local Democracy (RELOAD) to expand the rural tourism capacities in the region. This activity was made possible thanks to the generous support of the #EU. Though #COVID19 will remain an immense challenge for tourism over this summer, domestic rural tourism is among the best choices we have. The focus on small groups and outdoor activities make it safer in terms of the pandemic than mass tourism, while the money we spend will make much more of a difference for the small businesses that depend on tourists to make a living.
