Watch American Rifleman staff on the range this week with an AR-15-size semi-automatic rifle from Sturm, Ruger & Co that's chambered for .308 Win. Credit where credit’s due, Ruger’s not the first company to come out with this rifle concept. Patriot Ordnance Factory has been out with several shrunken AR-10-style rifles over the last few years, and while these are great guns, they cost a bit more than most folks would like to spend. Ruger elected to bring the small-frame .308 semi-auto rifle to the masses with the SFAR, which is priced affordably and is still loaded with features. Watch the video above to see the Ruger SFAR in use on the range. The basic layout of the SFAR trims much of the space that used to exist in the back portion of traditional AR-10 lower receivers, bringing the rear takedown pin much closer to the milled pocket where the trigger, disconnector and hammer sit. The AR-10 and AR-15 have always shared parts commonality when it comes to drop-in trigger units, and the SFAR is no different in that regard. The upper receiver and bolt have been subsequently shortened, bringing the rifle to an overall length not much different than your standard AR-15. In addition to the size, the weight has also been trimmed down significantly, and the 16”-barreled version of the SFAR we have on the range here weighs in at just under 7 lbs. It’s equipped with a mid-length gas system, and at the gas block, there’s an adjustment screw that allows you to choose one of four settings to fine-tune gas flow. Surrounding the gas tube and barrel is a long handguard that runs just behind the muzzle, and the threaded muzzle is topped with Ruger’s two-port Boomer brake to reduce recoil. The handguard is outfitted with M-Lok attachment slots at the 3-, 6-, and 9-o’clock positions, and there are short lengths of Picatinny rail at the front and rear that provide a bit more real estate for mounting optics and open sights. Despite the more affordable price point of the SFAR, Ruger includes some nice touches on the gun, including an upgraded Magpul MOE-SL buttstock and MOE-SL pistol grip, which comes complete with a storage compartment inside that secures the adjustment wrench for the rifle’s gas block. The trigger, Ruger’s Elite 452 design, is also a welcome step up, providing a clean pull that measured just under 5 lbs. Shooting a lightweight .308 rifle is definitely an experience you’ll feel, but thanks to Ruger’s included brake, we found the gun to be pretty manageable on the range. The 16” version was handy, easy to carry, came up on target quickly and was controllable through quick follow-up shots. All in all, we thought the SFAR is a great new addition to the market and will make a superb general-purpose rifle that’s adaptable to any role. This review has changed and it's updated here in test: Initially we were quite excited to see this lightweight AR10 from Ruger. I have been requesting this for quite some time in TNP. Most AR10s will be 9lbs+ with glass. We initially were mostly impressed with the SFAR; see the video for details. Some jams happened but we gave the SFAR the benefit of the doubt. Further testing showed the SFAR to be unpredictably unreliable with even high quality brass ammo. It is no longer a rec'd AR10 platform; a change from what is said in this video. In Run N Gun action in dusty conditions we found we could not rely upon a lubricated SFAR to get it done. Latest Ruger® addition to the modern sporting rifle lineup, the Small-Frame Autoloading Rifle, or SFAR™. Chambered in 7.62 NATO / .308 Win., the SFAR combines the ballistic advantages of .308 Winchester with the size of a traditional MSR. The smaller of the two initial configurations of this rifle features a 16" barrel model and weighs in at just 6.8 pounds unloaded. By utilizing superior materials and engineering, the SFAR is bigger and stronger where it needs to be and remains smaller and lighter than comparable .308-sized rifles. Utilizing many mil-spec-compatible components and fitted with the Ruger® Elite 452® trigger, the construction and operation of the Ruger SFAR will be familiar to the millions of Americans who have already adopted traditional modern sporting rifles. The upper and lower receivers are both CNC-machined from 7075-T6 forgings and feature an oversized magazine well, forward assist, dust cover and brass deflector. Barrels are cold hammer-forged with 5R rifling, a 5/8"-24 muzzle thread, and finished with black nitride for accuracy, longevity and easy cleaning. CNC-machined from high-strength super alloy steel, the bolt and barrel extension feature tapered lugs that strengthen the breech by adding material in key areas. SFAR rifles are fitted with a 4-position regulated gas block to achieve ideal function across the wide range of ammunition available in the marketplace today, whether running the rifle dirty or clean, suppressed or unsuppressed. The included, on-board 3/16" ball-end wrench makes for easy regulator adjustment, while the 2-port Boomer muzzle brake makes the SFAR exceptionally soft shooting. The handguard features Magpul® M-LOK® accessory attachment slots at the 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00 positions and sockets for QD sling swivels on both sides. Model 5610 features a 16" barrel, a mid-length gas system and a 15" Lite free-float handguard whose top rail has been docked in the middle for improved grip access and lighter weight. Model 5611 has a 20" barrel, a rifle-length gas system and a 15" handguard with a full Picatinny top rail. Both models feature Magpul MOE SL® stock, MOE® grip and ship with one, 20-round Magpul PMAG® magazine.

The first 50 rounds through the Ruger SFAR. Straight out of the box I mounted a suppressor, optic and headed to the range. Since this initial 50 I've put quite a few rounds down range with this rifle. Testing both the accuracy and reliability. After making some configuration changes, I believe this will be an excellent candidate for a heavy hitting (308) DMR. Providing the reliability and the practical accuracy is there. For now, the testing continues so stay tuned. I plan to do a dedicated accuracy video on this rifle and also a complete overview once I've finished "building" it out and put a lot more rounds down range. Thanks for watching. Shooting a brand new Ruger SFAR 20" #sfar
Come along as I take you on yet another chuck safari with Ruger's new SFAR .308 Winchester rifle with a 20" barrel. I've experimented with 110 grain and 125 grain varmint profile .308 caliber bullets, and in this video I show you how Speer's 130 grain hp with its gaping trash can style hollow point inflicts explosive evisceration on fatty targets like rock chucks. I find the Ruger SFAR 20" and it's adjustable rifle length gas system to be soft shooting especially with light for caliber bullets. It functions flawlessly with chuck popping charge weights in powders like Alliant's AR-Comp and flat nose style bullets like Speer's 130 hp and hot-cor bullets. Enjoy the chuck carnage scrapage!

We got the new Ruger SFAR in .308. We are fine tuning it with some upgrades and will have a review very soon.
RUGER SFAR 16" 308/7.62x51, YHM Phantom LT Suppressor, Primary Arms SLx LPVO 1-8x24 Gen III, BFG Vickers padded sling & YHM extended charging handle latch. Gas setting 1# runs perfect suppressed as it should. All quality ammo runs perfect on gas setting 2# unsuppressed. How is your SFAR running for you?
I just got a Strike!!! Part 2 just got removed by YouTube for guideline violations… they claim I was selling guns and ammo. I appealed and it was quickly rejected. Fuck YouTube. Bunch of cock fags. Come see me on Rumble. I said that in the video… I guess I struck a nerve. We have 206 rounds through the gun at this point. Freedom Munitions has been very cool about the issue with their 168gr A-Max load. I'm sending it back for popping primers which is a shame because it is an ideal load. They are refunding me no questions asked. The ammo popping primers in the video is FM 147gr reman, and I'll just shoot it up. I put 3 rounds of that 147gr reman in just about the same hole at 50 yards and wasn't recoding of course. I will snap a picture if I remember and put it in part 4. That told me everything I needed to know about the capabilities of the gun/lpvo combo and with crap ammo too!
